MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) in India is one of the most sought-after undergraduate medical programs. As of February 2025, India has approximately 1,17,906 MBBS seats across 776 medical colleges. In the Union Budget 2025, the government announced plans to add 10,000 new medical seats, aiming to increase the total number of MBBS seats to around 1,27,906.
Over the next five years, there is a strategic plan to further increase the number of medical seats by 75,000, encompassing both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programs. This expansion is part of the government’s initiative to enhance medical education and healthcare accessibility across the country. The increase in seats will provide more opportunities for aspiring medical students and help address the growing demand for healthcare professionals in India.
The distribution of these additional seats will be across various states and institutions, including both government and private medical colleges. The exact allocation and implementation details are expected to be outlined by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and respective state authorities in the coming years.
This development is a significant step towards strengthening the healthcare infrastructure and ensuring a higher doctor-to-patient ratio in the country
